Bangladesh’ handicrafts sector is known for its handmade products of natural and/or recycled materials. Basketry, rugs and mats, home textiles, and shopping bags/totes are particularly strong product groups.

Basketry

The country’s basketry is made of natural materials such as jute, sea grass, water hyacinth or mela leaf. Recycled materials are also possible, such as cotton or even plastic. Combining materials can add value to a design.

Rugs and mats

Hand-woven or hand-knotted rugs and mats are made of natural fibres, often jute. Recycled materials are also a good option, such as strips of recycled saris or leftover fabric pieces from textile manufacturing. The material for mats can be relatively coarse.

Bags and totes

Shoppers, beach bags, totes etc. are made of natural materials such as jute, sea grass, mela leaf, catkin, or recycled materials. They offer a good alternative for disposable plastic bags, which are used less and less in Europe due to restrictions resulting from the Plastic Bags Directive.

Garden products

Products for the garden include garden pots and planters, which can be made of natural materials such as jute and terracotta, as well as outdoor home textiles such as tablecloths and outdoor rugs.
